In the original anthem, the motif of thoughts moving like “night shadows” (Nächtliche Schatten) represented the elusive nature of free thought in the face of censorship and despotism. Menx translates this classic motif into a modern socio-political reality, emphasizing that internal resistance remains man’s last uncontrollable space.
